Delete your ROOT VPN account
This page explains how to delete your account for ROOT VPN, the VPN app for iPhone, Android and Windows provided by ROOT VPN LTD. One account covers every app, so deleting it removes your access on all your devices.
You can delete your account in three ways. The first two take effect straight away.
1. In the ROOT VPN app
- Open the ROOT VPN app on your iPhone or Android device and sign in.
- Go to the Account tab and tap Delete account.
- Confirm it is you with your password (and a verification code if you use two step verification), then tap Permanently delete account.
2. On this page
If your account has a password, you can delete it here without the app. Enter your account email and password to confirm it is you.
Your ROOT VPN account has been deleted.
You have been signed out everywhere and your devices can no longer connect. If you subscribed in the ROOT VPN app through Apple or Google, cancel that subscription in your store settings too (see below).
Signed up with Apple or Google and never set a password? Use the email route below, or delete in the app.
3. By email
Email privacy@rootvpn.app from the email address on your account with the subject "Delete my ROOT VPN account". We may ask you to confirm the request from that address so nobody else can delete your account. We complete email requests within one month of confirming them, as UK data protection law requires, and we reply when it is done.
What we delete
- Your account: email address, password hash, display name, the sign in identifier from Apple or Google if you used one, and your preferences.
- Your devices and their VPN keys: every device on your account and its WireGuard key, which we also remove from our VPN servers so it can no longer connect.
- Your connection records: session times, the IP address you connected from and the amount of data used.
- Your security records, such as sign in events, and every signed in session.
- A subscription bought on rootvpn.app is cancelled automatically, so you are not charged again.
We keep no activity logs, so there is no browsing history, DNS history or traffic content to delete.
What we keep, and for how long
- Payment records. Records of payments you made are kept by our payment providers (Stripe for purchases on rootvpn.app, and Apple or Google together with RevenueCat for purchases in the apps) for as long as UK tax and accounting law requires, normally six years from the end of the financial year concerned.
- An anonymous record that a deletion took place. It holds no email address, IP address or other detail that identifies you.
- Anonymous daily totals (for example, the number of connections in a day), which contain nothing that identifies you.
- Backups. Copies in our encrypted backups are removed as those backups expire on their normal cycle. We do not restore deleted accounts from them.
Subscriptions bought in the app
If you subscribed in the ROOT VPN app, Apple or Google bills and manages that subscription. Deleting your account does not cancel it, so cancel it as well to stop future charges:
- iPhone: Settings, tap your name, then Subscriptions, or visit apps.apple.com/account/subscriptions.
- Android: Google Play, tap your profile icon, then Payments and subscriptions, or visit play.google.com/store/account/subscriptions.
