Why use a VPN in South Africa?

In South Africa a VPN keeps Showmax and DStv sport while travelling and adds a secure layer on shared networks. Once ROOT's South Africa exits go live, you will connect through a server inside South Africa, so websites and apps see a local South Africa address instead of your real one, so home streaming, banking and shopping keep working the moment you land, and anyone on the same Wi-Fi sees only encrypted traffic.

We plan exits in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria. Until they land, South Africa is marked "coming soon" in the app rather than being selectable. We only list countries you can genuinely exit from. In the meantime you can connect to any of our live locations from the full list.

What you can unblock in South Africa

Once South Africa servers go live, connect first and then open any of these as usual.

Fast in South Africa when it lands, private everywhere

Built for speed

WireGuard tunnels with BBR on every ROOT exit, and the South Africa servers will be no different. HD streaming and low-lag gaming, not the buffering you expect from free VPNs.

No activity logs

We do not record where you go or what you do on any of our servers. Your browsing is not stored, and it is not for sale.

Every device, one account

Windows, Mac, iOS and Android, all under one login: 1 device on Free, 5 on Plus, 10 on Pro.

South Africa VPN questions

Is a VPN legal in South Africa?
Yes. Using a VPN in South Africa is legal for everyday privacy, secure Wi-Fi and reaching services you already pay for. As always, you stay responsible for following the terms of the apps and sites you use.
When are South Africa servers coming?
Soon. South Africa exits are on the ROOT roadmap, with Johannesburg, Cape Town, Durban and Pretoria planned. Until they are live, South Africa shows as "coming soon" in the app rather than being selectable. We only list countries you can genuinely exit from.
Can I watch Showmax with ROOT?
Once South Africa servers go live, connect and open Showmax as normal. Until then South Africa is not selectable in the app. We do not fake a location by quietly routing you somewhere else.
Does ROOT keep logs of what I do in South Africa?
No. ROOT keeps no activity logs on any server, and the South Africa exits will be no different when they go live. We do not record the sites you visit or what you stream, so there is nothing to hand over and nothing to sell.
