Reading your results

Latency is the round trip between you and our German server, and it sets the feel of everything: page loads, game responsiveness, video call lag. Download and upload are single-stream throughput over HTTPS, which is what one browser tab actually gets, rather than the theoretical line rate on your bill.

The most useful thing you can do with this page is a before-and-after: run it, connect your VPN, run it again. A good WireGuard tunnel to a nearby server should barely move the numbers. If yours craters, read why VPNs slow connections down and how to get the speed back.

Speed test FAQ

How does this speed test work?

Your browser downloads and uploads bursts of incompressible random data to our server and times them, plus a series of tiny requests to measure latency. Everything runs over HTTPS from this page; nothing is installed and nothing is stored.

Why do results differ from other speed tests?

Every test measures the path between you and that test\u2019s server. Ours runs from a server in Germany, so if you are far away, latency will be higher and single-stream throughput can dip. It is most useful for comparing VPN on versus VPN off over the same path.

How much speed should a VPN cost me?

On a well-run WireGuard VPN, typically a few percent on nearby servers. Distance adds latency, and latency drags single-connection throughput down. If you lose more than about a fifth of your speed to a nearby server, something is off; our guide on making a VPN faster covers the usual fixes.

Does running the test use my data allowance?

Yes, a real test has to move real data. A full run transfers roughly 30 to 40 MB. Avoid repeating it on a metered mobile connection.
