Home/Blog/How to watch ITVX abroad: a guide for Brits away
ITVX works on UK internet connections only, so the moment you land in Spain or settle in Dubai, the player stops. Connecting to a UK server with a VPN gives you a UK IP address, which is usually what ITVX checks. It is not guaranteed, and this guide is straight with you about why.
To watch ITVX abroad you need to reach it through a UK internet address. ITVX looks at the IP address your request comes from, works out roughly where in the world that is, and only plays programmes when the answer is the United Kingdom. Anywhere else, you get a message saying the content is not available in your region. ITVX checks this when you try to play something.
A VPN changes that one piece of information. When you connect to a ROOT VPN server in the UK, your traffic leaves the internet from that server, so ITVX sees a UK address instead of the hotel Wi-Fi in Lisbon or your apartment broadband in Toronto. For many people that is all it takes for the catch up library and live channels to load again.
Before you do it, check that you are allowed to. Only stream content you have the rights to access and follow ITV's terms of use. A VPN changes where your connection appears to come from. It does not change the rules of the service, and ITV decides who its programmes are licensed for. If you are unsure, ITV's help pages are the place to check first.
ITV buys and sells programmes country by country. A drama shown free on ITVX in Britain may have been sold to a different broadcaster in Australia or the United States, and that broadcaster has paid for the right to show it there. Geo restriction is how ITV keeps those deals intact, so the block is a licensing decision rather than anything personal.
The same logic explains why some shows vanish while others stay. Sport is usually the tightest, because rights for football, rugby and racing are sold separately in almost every market. Soaps and ITV's own productions tend to be simpler, but they are still licensed for UK viewers first. So even with a UK connection, the library you see may differ slightly from week to week as deals start and end.
For expats this can feel odd, especially if you still pay bills in Britain or split your year between two countries. The practical point is that ITVX cannot see your passport or your council tax. It sees an IP address, and it makes a decision based on that. That is also why the same account can work at home in Leeds and fail an hour after landing in Malaga.
Streaming services know people use VPNs, and many actively look for them. They keep lists of IP ranges that belong to data centres and VPN providers, and when an address lands on one of those lists the service may refuse to play, show an error, or load the page without any video. ITVX can do this too. It is not a sign you have done anything wrong.
That means a setup that works on Monday can stop on Friday. Nobody selling a VPN can honestly promise that a particular streaming service will work every time, and you should be wary of any provider that does. What a good provider can do is notice problems quickly and look into it. Expect the occasional hiccup and plan around it.
ROOT VPN includes Streaming mode (Premium) for exactly this kind of use. If a stream will not start, try another UK location, clear the ITVX site data in your browser, and reconnect. If it still fails, tell our support team which service and location you tried so we can look into it. Specific reports help us far more than general guesswork does.
Distance matters for streaming quality. Your video travels from ITVX to the UK server and then on to you, so the further you are from Britain, the more that trip adds. Viewers in Europe usually notice very little difference, while someone in Asia or Australia may see a slightly longer wait before playback starts. Once a programme is running, it normally settles down.
A few habits help. Use a wired connection or sit close to the router if the Wi-Fi is weak. Close downloads and cloud backups on the same device while you watch. If the picture keeps dropping in quality, disconnect and reconnect, as a fresh connection sometimes gets a quieter route at peak times. Evenings in the UK are usually the busiest period.
ROOT connects over WireGuard by default, which is light and quick to reconnect when your network changes. The Windows app also has a kill switch that is on by default, so if the tunnel drops mid episode your traffic stays blocked until it reconnects rather than slipping out over your local connection. That matters abroad, where the local network is what ITVX would otherwise see.
ROOT VPN's Free plan costs nothing, needs no card and has unlimited data, but it connects you to the fastest automatic location for where you are. Abroad, that will usually be a server near you, not one in the UK. For ITVX you need to pick the UK yourself, and choosing a location is part of Premium. Free is still handy for general privacy on hotel and airport Wi-Fi.
There are two ways to get Premium. You can buy it with the Plus plan, which covers five devices and every location, or Pro, which covers ten. Or you can stay on Free and opt in to sharing, which unlocks Premium in return. Sharing is off by default and you can turn it off with one tap. It never pays cash, it simply unlocks Premium.
If you plan to watch on a laptop and a phone while travelling, check the device count before you choose. Free covers one device, Plus covers five and Pro covers ten. ROOT runs on Windows today, with the Android app on the way, so a Windows laptop is the place to start. Your ITVX account works the same way on any of them.
