Can I use YouTube TV abroad with a VPN?

Partly. YouTube TV is only sold in the United States and checks your IP address, so a VPN connected to a US server lets the site load and play. However, Google also asks members to confirm their home area periodically and uses device location in its apps, so long trips can still trigger restrictions.

How YouTube TV checks where you are

YouTube TV layers several checks. Your IP address decides whether the service loads at all outside the US and which local channels you receive. On top of that, Google requires you to use the service in your home area regularly and to confirm your location in the app every few months.

The mobile apps can also read device location directly. That means a VPN handles the IP layer cleanly, but it cannot answer a GPS prompt on your phone with a US location.

What works while travelling

On a laptop browser, connecting to a US VPN server generally restores playback of your paid subscription, since only the IP address is visible. Choose a server near your home market if local channels matter to you.

Expect the home area check to catch up on extended stays abroad, because it is designed to. If Google asks you to verify from your home area and you cannot, parts of the service degrade until you do. A VPN changes where your connection appears to be, and this is one of the services that checks more than your connection.

Will my local channels change when I use a VPN server in another state?
Your live local channels follow the location YouTube TV believes you are in, so a server in another market can change the local affiliates you see. Your home area recordings and library stay tied to your account.
How long can I use YouTube TV outside the US?
Google's terms expect the service to be used primarily at home in the US, and periodic home area verification enforces that. There is no published grace period, but months abroad without checking in will usually surface restrictions.
