A VPN, or virtual private network, is a service that encrypts your internet traffic and routes it through a remote server. Websites see the server's IP address instead of yours, and networks you use cannot read the content of your traffic. People use VPNs for privacy, security on public Wi-Fi, and changing their apparent location.
When you connect to a VPN, your device builds an encrypted connection, often called a tunnel, to a server run by the VPN provider. All of your internet traffic travels through that tunnel. Your internet service provider can see that you are connected to a VPN server, but not which sites you visit or what you send.
On the other side, websites and apps see the VPN server's IP address rather than your own. That changes your apparent location and makes it harder to tie your activity back to your home connection.
A VPN is not an invisibility cloak. If you log in to an account, that service still knows who you are. It does not remove cookies, stop browser fingerprinting, or make you anonymous on its own. It also cannot protect a device that is already infected with malware.
