A student guide to VPNs uni Wi-Fi, halls and staying safe

Uni life means shared Wi-Fi everywhere. Halls, the library, the union bar. Here is what is worth doing to keep your stuff safe without overthinking it.

A student guide to VPNs: uni Wi-Fi, halls and staying safe

Shared Wi-Fi is shared

Campus and halls networks are used by thousands of people and run by someone else. Most sites use HTTPS so the basics are protected, but the network can still see which sites you visit and when.

A VPN puts all of that inside one encrypted tunnel so the network sees much less.

Follow your uni rules

Your uni has an IT policy and some networks do not allow VPNs. Read it and stick to it. A VPN is for your privacy, not for getting around rules you signed up to.

If the uni network blocks VPNs you can still use one on your own broadband or phone hotspot.

The basics matter most

Use a password manager and a different password everywhere. Turn on two factor login for your uni account and your email. Lock your laptop when you walk away.

Those three things stop more problems than any app.

A ten minute setup for the new term

  1. Install a password manager and change any reused passwords.
  2. Turn on two factor login for email and your uni account.
  3. Install ROOT VPN Free on your Windows laptop.
  4. Connect before you use Wi-Fi in halls or the library, where your uni allows it.

A student guide to VPNs: common questions

Can my uni see what I do on its Wi-Fi?
The network can usually see which sites you visit and when, even with HTTPS. It cannot normally see what you type on HTTPS sites.
