VPN for your gaming console PlayStation, Xbox and Switch

Consoles cannot run a VPN app, so you cover a PlayStation, Xbox or Switch through your router to cut ping on bad routes, open region-locked content and hide your IP from DDoS. Free to start.

One account covers up to 10 devices across every platform.

ROOT VPN on gaming console

PlayStation, Xbox and Nintendo Switch have no VPN app of their own, so you protect them at the router. Set ROOT up there and the console's traffic runs through the tunnel, which can lower ping on poorly routed connections and hide your IP from DDoS in ranked play.

A VPN also opens region-locked stores, demos and early releases, and keeps your real address off the radar of anyone who pulls IPs to attack opponents. Pick a server near the game's servers to protect yourself without adding lag.

How to set up on gaming console

A few steps and you are connected. No technical know-how needed.

  1. Create a free ROOT account for your login and router details.
  2. Set ROOT up on a router that supports WireGuard or OpenVPN, following the VPN on your router guidance.
  3. Choose a server close to the game's data centre, or a region whose content you want to unlock.
  4. Connect your PlayStation, Xbox or Switch to that router by Wi-Fi or cable.
  5. Launch your game, the console now plays through the ROOT tunnel with your IP hidden.

VPN for gaming console: common questions

Can I put a VPN on a PlayStation or Xbox?
Not directly, consoles have no VPN app. You cover them through your router: set ROOT up there and the PlayStation, Xbox or Switch behind it runs through the tunnel.
Will a VPN lower my ping on console?
It can, if your ISP routes game traffic inefficiently. Exiting through a router server nearer the game's data centre may cut latency. It also hides your IP from DDoS.
Can I access another region's game store?
Often. Set the router's exit to the region you want and the console sees that location, which can open region-locked stores, demos and earlier releases, subject to each store's own rules.
