Working from a café a simple setup for remote workers

Lots of us work from cafés and co-working spaces now. A few small habits keep your work and your clients safe.

Working from a café: a simple setup for remote workers

Get on the right network

Check the network name with staff. Fake networks often copy the real name with a small change.

If there is a password on the wall that is a good sign, but it is still shared with everyone in the room.

Protect the connection

Connect your VPN before you open email or client tools. It keeps your traffic encrypted between your laptop and the VPN server.

If your company has its own VPN for work systems, follow their rules on when to use which.

Protect the laptop

Lock your screen when you get up, even for a minute. Sit with your back to a wall if you are working on something private.

Keep your laptop and apps updated so you are not running old holes.

Before you open your laptop

  1. Ask staff for the real network name.
  2. Connect ROOT VPN.
  3. Open email and work tools.
  4. Lock your screen every time you step away.

Working from a café: common questions

Can people on café Wi-Fi see what I do?
On a shared network others can try to watch traffic. HTTPS protects most of it and a VPN encrypts the whole connection.
Can I use ROOT VPN with my work VPN?
Running two VPNs at once usually causes problems. Follow your employer rules for work systems.
